Scrap is a traded commodity. Any rate published as a permanent figure is wrong within weeks.
Copper and aluminium follow the LME
Both are traded commodities, priced against the London Metal Exchange. Indian rates follow the LME with a lag and a local adjustment, which is why the number you were quoted last month is already out of date.
Iron and steel follow local demand
There is no exchange price for Indian ferrous scrap. The rate is set by induction-furnace and EAF buyers against local billet prices and local supply, so it moves with how busy the building sites and fabrication shops are.
Fuel and supply move the rest
The cost of running a truck, seasonal demand and how much material is already on the yard all feed into what we can pay on a given day.

Grade decides more than weight does.
This is where most sellers lose money, and it is fixable before we arrive.
Two piles of iron can differ by a third
Heavy clean steel is graded HMS 1 and carries a clear premium. The moment you add thin sheet, tube, or a gate with paint and hinges still on it, the load drops a grade and the rate drops with it.
Copper spans the widest range of any material
Bright copper, also called millberry, is bare uncoated wire and carries the highest rate of any common scrap. Insulated cable is the lowest of the four grades, because the plastic is weight you are not paid for.
Attachments are weight you are not paid for
Concrete, wood, rubber and plastic attached to metal are deducted by most yards. Knock the rubble off before we arrive and the rate holds.
